Golfing in spain
The Costa Blanca is a golfers paradise, with more than 20 golf courses located in superb surroundings
in a typically Mediterranean landscape.
Some of the best golf courses in Europe are to be found along the coastline, offering a variety of
different styles and terrains to cater for all standards, from novices to experienced players. With
its excellent climate all year round, the Costa Blanca is an ideal location for practicing and
enjoying the popular sport.
Near Alicante city, you will find the courses of El Plantio, Alenda, Alicante Golf, La Finca, Bonalba
and La Marquesa, and at the southern end of the province, on the outskirts of Orihuela, the courses of
Las Ramblas, Villamartin and Campoamar. Further south, near Murcia are Altorreal, Mosa Trajectum and
La Manga, which is one of Europes top golf resorts.
North of Alicante are located Don Cayo, Ifach, Javea, La Sella and Oliva Nova, with the courses of El
Saler and Manises on the outskirts of Valencia city and El Bosque and Escorpion further north.
At the northern end of the Costa Blanca, in the province of Castellon, you will find the Mediterraneo,
Costa Azahar and Panoramica.
Many of the golf courses have been created be prestigious designers in the sport and some have been
designed by top Spanish professionals. Alicante Golf and Oliva Nova were designed by Severinano
Ballesteros , Arnold Palmer was responsible for remodelling the three championship courses at La Manga
and Panormica bears the signature of Bernard Langer.
Another two magnificent 18 hole courses, designed by Jack Niklaus, have just been completed near
Benidorm and are already open, although the official inauguration of the complex will take place in June
this year.
Some of the courses such as El Bosque, La Manga and El Saler, regularly play host to Spanish opens and
La Manga has been the venue for many other major professional tournaments, PGA championships and
Qualifying Schools for both the Mens and the Ladies European tours. The prestigious Seve Trophy took
place at El Saler in 2003 and the PGA EuroPro Tour Championship Final was held at Mosa Trajectum in
2004.
All the courses offer excellent golfing facilities and the average cost of a round of 18 holes is 55
euros. If you wish to play, you should contact the golf club for information and to book tee times. The
clubs also organise internal and inter-club golf tournaments and have an extensive and varied calendar
of social events for club members, many of whom are expats.
If you are visiting for a holiday and would like to play a round of golf, or if you are a golf lover or
belong to a golf society looking for the superb golfing experience the local courses offer, the Costa
Blanca is an ideal destination where you can enjoy some of the best golf in Spain.
