Guardamar

Guardamar del Sergura stands at the mouth of the river Segura. It has a population of around 11,000 and lies south of Alicante on the coast of the Costa Blanca. Guardamar is a typical Spanish town, which not only has one of the best beaches in Spain, in fact there are 12km of beach and sandy dunes, but it also has a fantastic street market on Wednesdays and has some brilliant shops, bars and restaurants. It is very popular with both holiday makers and people choosing to relocate. Situated halfway between Alicante and Murcia it allows choice of either airport.

The ancient town of Guaramar del Segura was built on a hill whose skirts were washed by the Segura River. Still preserved there are the ruins of a castle and other historic remains from Hellenic times when this town was a port.

Between the town and the beach is the enormous 'Queen Sofia' park, thick with trees and plants, where visitors can enjoy cool, refreshing strolls even on the hottest of days.  To beautify the natural surroundings, ponds, botanical tours and samples of aquatic fauna have been added.  More than 800 hectares of coastal parkland have been carefully preserved, with hundreds of monumental dunes, pine, palm and eucalyptus trees, which were planted at the beginning of the 20th century to prevent the dunes from invading the urban area.
