Torrevieja

Torrevieja is situated on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante just 30 minutes south from Alicante airport. Torrevieja quite literally means old tower, at the beginning of the last century there was only the old watchtower and a few houses. The watchtowers that are dotted up and down the coast existed to watch for Moroccan pirates that roamed the seas in the Mediterranean for centuries.

Torrevieja is surrounded by two huge saltwater lagoons known as Laguna de la Mata and the Salinas de San Miguel and are said to be very beneficial for those people with arthritis, rheumatism and chest problems - why not take a medicinal bath in the waters of the lagoon! Today Torrevieja exports 2 million tons of salt yearly from the lakes. Torrevieja has grown significantly since the 1980's when thousands of Europeans moved here and the town's economy changed to encompass tourism as well as the income from salt export. The salt lakes are now also a thriving bird reserve and natural park. There are walks around the salt lakes which if you are a bird watcher or nature lover are well worth a visit.

The beaches of Torrevieja are without a doubt some of the best in the Costa Blanca region, La Mata, Los Locos, El Cura, El Acequión and Los Náufragos together make up the beaches of the Torreviejan coast, not forgetting the marvellous coves in the northern part, as well as the so-called natural swimming pools which are found beside the Juan Aparicio promenade right in the centre of the town. Street markets are very popular in the town , they have a real arab-style market atmosphere and have achieved great popularity amongst the Spanish and the thousands of Europeans that visit Torrevieja.
