It has been described as the ‘Baroque City’ due to its baroque heritage, one of the most important in the area, and the historical events that have shaped Lorca, since the Iron Age, to what it is today. Mention must be made to the numerous archaeological sites, the Columna Miliaria dating from Roman times, the Espolón Tower and the Alfonsina Tower, a Christian construction dating from after the Reconquest, the ´Porche de San Antonio´, the gate in the old wall that surrounded the city in the X century, the numerous churches and convents dating from different periods and built in different styles from XVth century to the XVIIIth century, the baroque palaces and stately homes, such as the Guevara Palace, the Palace of the Counts of San Julián or Casa de la Mula.
Lorca has a wealth of historical buildings including churches, Roman villas, palaces, monuments and works of art, however, the city is dominated by the hilltop castle. Lorca is a friendly and hospitable town that offers recreation, shopping and a unique gastronomy. Lorca also has a wealth of fiestas to be enjoyed by the visitor and local alike.
Lorca is also an important commercial centre and due to this, has a very good network of roads, rail connections and communications. It is a large town by Spanish standards with some 80,000 inhabitants and even boasts a multiplex cinema and a theatre. All this and just 20 minutes drive down to the beach.
Visitors are always made more than welcome in Lorca, and its great summers, mild winters, restaurants, hotels and first-class tourist infrastructures, all combine to add to the rural tourism on offer in the largest district in the Region of Murcia. The city lies close to many mountain chains and areas of great natural beauty making Lorca a place to really have a great time.
