Alcoy
Alcoy is a city and a municipality located in the province of Alicante. Its population is some 61,000 and its main industries are metal, food, paper and textiles. The city, surrounded by mountains, is crossed by two small rivers which have given Alcoy its peculiar character as a city full of bridges and which contributed in the past to the formation of its industry, as their power was used as a major source of energy. Some buildings with artistic interest in the city are the Archeological Museum; the convent of Sant Agustí, reconstructed in the 18th century with paintings of the 16th century; and the Catholic church of Santa Maria, whose style is Valencian Baroque. Alcoy celebrates its Moors and Christians festival in April. Alcoy is located in the mountains north west about 54kms from Alicante and 100kms from Valencia.
