Mar Menor is a unique area located on the east coast of Spain within the region of Murcia, just above Cartegena. It boasts one of the most moderate climates in Spain, with more sunshine days than other mainland areas and water temperatures higher than average. The Mar Menor is the largest salt water lake in Europe measuring a surface area of 170 square kilometres. A salt water lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a 22km strip called “La Manga”. The waters of the Mar Menor have a high mineral content and is said to be very beneficial in the treatment of arthritis and other associated ailments. The coast of the Mar Menor has many small coastal towns.
Los Belones lies a mile outside of La Manga Club and offers a growing range of restaurants including Indian, Greek, Italian and Asian cuisine. A popular, attractive town with a lot going for it.
La Manga del Mar Menor. This narrow strip of land 14 miles long offers the choice of two seas - the Mar Menor on one side, ideal for watersports and the Mediterranean, perfect for fishing and underwater exploration. Down 'the strip' you'll find a host of restaurants and bars to choose from and soak up the buzzing nightlife of Plaza Bohemia and Zoco. La Union in the very south eastern part of the Murcia region is right next to the beautiful shores and beaches of Mar Menor and La Manga with access to the Mediterranean just a short distance away in the village of Portman. La Union has a population of approx 15,000. The town is 7km away from Cartagena and 13km from San Javier airport. The city of Murcia is 30 minutes drive away.
Los Alcazares is situated in the South eastern corner of Spain in the Murcia region. It sits on the shore of the Mar Menor and enjoys an average of 320 days a year sunshine. It boasts a mile long palm fringed promenade next to the beaches of the Mar Menor and has a new marina. Los Alcazares has a good shopping centre, fine restaurants and even its own cinema. There are no less than seven golf courses to be found between 5 minutes and 40 minute drive. Murcia city is a thirty minute drive away and the city of Cartagena is 15 km, a beautiful historic city with many Roman ruins.
Los Nietos is a typical Spanish fishing village situated on the shores of the Mar Menor. It is a friendly town with the usual array of small shops, a tabac, supermarket, fresh fish shop, banks, cafes and bars. There is a long promenade which stretches for about a mile. The world famous La Manga Club is only a ten minute drive away with its outstanding leisure and sports facilities, with several other golf courses in close vicinity making it a golfers paradise.
San Pedro del Pinatar.
The name of this coastal town means “ St Peter of the Pinewoods” when in the seventeenth century the fisherman built a small temple dedicated to “ San Pedro” the apostle and fisherman. San Pedro has a population of approx 15,200. The last few years have seen a lot of investment in infrastructure here and a steady growth in the property market. The main attraction centres along the front with its beach and there is a good shopping centre with ample bars and restaurants, there is also a weekly market that takes place on Mondays. For golf enthusiasts, there are three award winning courses within a 20 minute drive. Murcia airport is just 4km away north and Murcia city 35km.
San Javier is a coastal town and enjoys an excellent location next to the Mar Menor with the airport just outside of the town. It is a pretty town with a lovely church and narrow winding streets. Property prices in this area are still relatively low, although the coastal area around the Mar Menor is getting increasingly popular. The town has all the usual shops, banks and restaurants and even its own hospital. There are three golf courses within a 20 minute drive.
Santiago de la Ribera is a fishing town on the Mar Menor with an authentic Spanish feel, it has a new seafront promenade and a broad variety of shops, bars, fish restaurants, supermarkets and tapas bars, ideal for both living all year round or just as a holiday resort. There are several top class golf courses in the area all within a 20 minute drive. Murcia airport is just ten minutes away.
Sucina is located 12 km inland from the Mar Menor sea in the province of Murcia. The surrounding area is mainly olive groves and vineyards with a backdrop of mountains. The small town offers all necessary amenities including a health centre, church, school, post office and a local market weekly. The town is located next to a huge protected area called “Sierra de Columbares” designated to bird protection and is perfect for walking, mountain biking horse riding and trekking.
Torre Pacheco is 9km inland from the shores of the Mar Menor in the province of Murcia. Torre Pacheco is famous for its windmills, as in the nineteenth century there was a boom in windmill construction. There are fourteen remaining and four of these after restoration are in perfect condition. The town is quite lively, with a good range of shops, restaurants, tapas bars, an outdoor swimming pool, schools and medical centre.
